Shirehampton Methodist Church marked a remarkable milestone on Thursday 28 May, celebrating 150 years since the church first opened its doors. The date was especially significant, falling exactly 150 years to the day since the church’s opening on Pentecost Sunday in 1876.

To commemorate the occasion, the church hosted a joyful and welcoming Eco Afternoon, bringing together local organisations, community members and church partners for an event focused on care for creation, community connection and practical support.

The afternoon provided opportunities for visitors to engage with energy advice organisations, learn about environmental initiatives and enjoy a variety of crafts and activities. Guests also enjoyed freshly prepared wraps while spending time together in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The event created valuable opportunities for conversation, with the church’s Hub Coordinator and sessional worker able to connect with attendees, offer support and strengthen community relationships.

One of the highlights of the day was the creation of a beautiful new herb planter. Built by Chris from ALFA Christian Community alongside one of the Hub members, it was planted up by Sara from Bee Happy Shirehampton and now provides a lasting reminder of the celebration.

The toiletries tombola, organised to raise funds to twin one of the church’s toilets through the Toilet Twinning charity, proved popular. Although not all the prizes were claimed on the day, the tombola will continue at future church events to help reach the fundraising goal.

The positive impact of the afternoon was reflected in the feedback received. Renee from the Shirehampton Climate Engagement Group said:

“Thank you for inviting SCEG to the Eco Day. I think it was a great success. A lot of people enjoyed being there and I met some interesting climate energy groups.”

Perhaps the most encouraging comments came from two Hub members, who simply described it as:

“The best day they had had for ages.”

As Shirehampton Methodist Church celebrates 150 years of worship and witness, the Eco Afternoon demonstrated that its commitment to serving the local community remains as strong as ever.
