Some stories begin with celebration, others with change. This is one of both.

On Sunday 14 June, members, friends and former ministers gathered at Olveston Chapel for a Valedictory Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving, marking the close of more than 200 years of Methodist worship and witness in this much-loved place.

While saying goodbye to a church building is never easy, the afternoon was filled not simply with sadness, but with gratitude. Together, the congregation reflected on two centuries of faithful ministry, celebrated countless milestones, remembered those who have shaped the life of the chapel, and gave thanks for God’s faithfulness through every generation.

The service was led by Rev. Dr Simon Edwards, with moving and heartfelt contributions from former minister Rev. Sandy Williams and Superintendent Minister Rev. Teddy Kalongo. Each acknowledged the significance of the moment and the difficult decisions that had led to it, while encouraging those gathered to look to the future with faith and hope.

Following the service, everyone shared refreshments in the hall, where stories, photographs and memories flowed freely. It was a joyful opportunity to celebrate the life of the chapel, reconnect with old friends, and enjoy fellowship together. Guests had travelled from near and far to offer their support, and it was a pleasure to welcome another former minister, Rev. Singa Vunipola, back to share in the occasion.

Although this marks the end of worship at Olveston Chapel, it is not the end of the church’s story.

The congregation continues as Olveston and Tockington Methodist Church, serving both communities and gathering regularly for worship at Tockington Chapel. As one chapter closes, another continues, rooted in the same calling to share God’s love and serve the local community.

We give thanks for all that God has done through Olveston Chapel over more than 200 years and pray for God’s blessing on the continuing ministry of Olveston and Tockington Methodist Church in the years ahead.

As we honour the past, we look forward with hope, trusting that God’s mission continues.
