There was great joy at Bedminster Methodist Church as members, friends and guests gathered to celebrate two significant milestones in the life of the church: the dedication of the new Chapel and the unveiling of the beautifully restored First World War memorial window.

The service marked another chapter in the long and rich Methodist history in Bedminster, which stretches back to 1748 when John Wesley first preached in the area. From humble beginnings in a house in West Street, the Methodist congregation has grown and adapted through several buildings over nearly three centuries, always seeking to serve the local community.

The afternoon also celebrated the remarkable story of the memorial window, The Great Sacrifice. Originally installed in Hebron Methodist Church in memory of the 21 young men from the congregation who lost their lives during the First World War, the window was saved when Hebron closed in 1968 and was carefully relocated to its current home at Bedminster Methodist Church.

More recently, Storm Darragh caused significant damage to the window, leaving it unsafe and boarded up. What followed was an inspiring community effort, with fundraising and generous support enabling specialist restoration work to return the stained glass to its former beauty. The restored window now once again stands as a moving reminder of sacrifice, faith and hope for future generations.

The celebration also marked the dedication of the church’s new Chapel. As part of an exciting partnership with the Grace Network, worship has moved into a newly created, more intimate and welcoming space within the building. The new Chapel provides a fitting home for worship while enabling the wider building to be used more effectively for community ministry and outreach.

During the service, those present reflected on God’s faithfulness through generations, gave thanks for all who have worshipped and served in Bedminster over the years, and looked forward with hope to the future. Following the dedication, guests enjoyed refreshments and viewed a display of photographs illustrating the fascinating history of Methodist worship in Bedminster, from the earliest meeting places to the present day.

The occasion was a wonderful reminder that while buildings may change over time, the mission of the Church continues. As the restored memorial window shines once again and the new Chapel begins its life of worship, Bedminster Methodist Church looks forward with confidence to the next chapter in its story of serving God and the local community.
