On Sunday 25th October, at Potterswood, we celebrated our 134th anniversary, with an uplifting and joyful service led by Superintendent Teddy Kalongo.
Our church was established in 1892, as ‘the Tin Mission’ on Moravian Road, but was compulsory purchased in the 1960s to make way for factories. Our current building was erected on Pow’s Road, and the congregation (including a couple of our current members and friends, one of whom was a babe in arms at the time!) paraded their way down to begin worship in the new church
During our service, we reflected on the faithful souls that set up our church, and all the ministers and preachers that have preached over the years. We gave thanks for all that have worshiped and served at Potterwood before us; those that are in any way part of our church life now; and those that are still to come.
We prayed for our continued worship, service, and mission, and acknowledged that whatever changes may have been, or are still to come, the one true constant is our reason for our being a church; our eternal God.
Finally, during our service, we shared laughter over the amount of cups of tea that must have ever been consumed in the church! And not wanting to break with tradition, we ended by sharing tea and an anniversary cake that one of our ladies had made for us.
As we pray for the ongoing life and future of Potterswood, we remember the words of the hymn – ‘’Let us build a house where hands will reach beyond the wood and stone; to heal and strengthen, serve and teach, and live the word they’ve known’ Amen!
